The Maldivian government has announced a monthly allowance of MVR 9,000 for each family member of soldiers martyred during the November 3rd, 1988, coup.

A regulation published by the Ministry of Defence outlines the allowances, which also extend to individuals awarded the November 3rd Medal for bravery during the coup.

The families of the eight soldiers who lost their lives in the coup, including parents, children, and widows, are eligible for the monthly allowance, which will continue until their death. In addition, individuals awarded the Huravee Gold Medal will receive MVR 9,000 per month, while those awarded the Huravee Silver Medal will receive MVR 8,000, and those with the Ribbon for Bravery will receive MVR 6,000, all until their death.

The regulation, now effective, states that the allowances will cease upon the recipient’s death, and the family must notify the Ministry of Defence within a month. The coup, which aimed to overthrow former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, resulted in the deaths of 19 people, including eight soldiers and 11 civilians. The event is commemorated as Victory Day in the Maldives.
