A formal notice has been dispatched to Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, the Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, in connection with the recently filed no-confidence motion against her.
The Parliament secretariat confirmed that the 14-day notice was issued to Eva last Thursday.
The no-confidence motion, submitted by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) last Monday, garnered signatures from 50 Members of Parliament. Notably, this marks the second no-confidence motion filed against Eva this year.
The motion alleges that Eva Abdulla impeded the progress of a previous no-confidence motion filed by the MDP against former Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who happens to be Eva’s cousin and a fellow member of the Democrats. The MDP cited various reasons for the obstruction, prompting them to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court for resolution. The court ruled that Nasheed’s no-confidence motion had been unconstitutionally stalled.
In response to these developments, Mohamed Nasheed tendered his resignation on the same day a session was scheduled to deliberate on the motion. Subsequently, during a vote among members on Monday night, North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam, the parliamentary group leader of the MDP, was elected as the new Speaker.
The unfolding events in the Maldivian Parliament underscore a dynamic political landscape, with parliamentary procedures and motions taking center stage.
