Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the Minister of Islamic Affairs in the Maldives, revealed plans to launch a project facilitating imams with Master’s degrees to pursue Ph.D. programs at foreign universities.

Shaheem outlined his commitment to providing further educational opportunities for mosque imams, emphasising the forthcoming initiative during a swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Office.

The project is poised to not only enable imams to secure Ph.D. qualifications but also includes plans for specialised training programs in countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia.

Despite some existing training initiatives for imams in the Maldives, there have been widespread complaints about the inadequacy of such opportunities. Dr. Shaheem, who previously held the position of Islamic Minister in the government of former President Abdulla Yameen, aims to address these concerns through the proposed project.

Shaheem has served as the Chancellor of the Islamic University and as the Dean of Villa College. His educational credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Sharia from the Islamic University of Medina and a Ph.D. from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
