Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revealed that 64 hectares of land have been reclaimed at Rasmale’ Site A, accounting for around 47 per cent of the total reclamation planned for the site.

MACL said it reclaimed eight hectares over the past two days, up from 56 hectares reported on Monday. Site A covers 138 hectares and forms part of the wider Rasmale’ development, which aims to reclaim a total of 1,009 hectares.

Reclamation works at Site A began on 1 December and are being carried out using Cristóbal Colón, one of the world’s two largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, with a capacity of 46,000 cubic metres, operated by Jan De Nul. MACL has previously said the project targets an average reclamation rate of one and a half hectares per day.

Once reclamation is complete, development will proceed in line with the Rasmale’ Master Plan, which outlines plans for an eco-city with full municipal infrastructure. The government is currently seeking a consultant to finalise the Master Plan and has confirmed that preparations are under way to open applications for housing schemes in Rasmale’.
