President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that the death toll in the ongoing war in Syria has exceeded 70 Maldivians.
Speaking during a visit to Sh.komandoo, President Solih addressed the discrepancies between the previous government’s claims that there were no extremists in Maldives and that no Maldivians had participated in warfare. Upon assuming power, President Solih investigated the matter and discovered contrary evidence.
The President emphasised that over 70 Maldivians have lost their lives in the continuing conflict in Syria, while more than 100 Maldivians are engaged in the fighting. However, President Solih did not disclose the methodology employed to gather these figures.
Highlighting the significance of Islam as a fundamental pillar of the nation, President Solih stressed the importance of imparting the true teachings of the faith to today’s youth and society as a whole.
