Over MVR 10 Million in Gold Seized in Maldives Over the Last Year
In the past twelve months, approximately 10.99 kg of gold has been intercepted and confiscated in the Maldives and according to the Prosecutor General’s Office, these seizures have contributed an estimated MVR 10,167,948 to the state’s revenue.
In all instances, criminal charges were filed, and the smuggled gold was confiscated.
Globally, gold prices tend to vary between USD 60,000 and USD 70,000 per kilogram. This suggests that the total value of the gold collected is close to USD 659,000, equating to roughly MVR 10,167,948.
The Maldives has established import regulations and prior notification to Maldives Customs is necessary for items coming into or departing from the nation.
Items for personal consumption, valued below MVR 6,000 and which do not require special permissions or are not on the prohibited list, might be brought into the Maldives without official declaration.
