Palau and Maldives See Vast Scope for Private Sector Partnerships, Says Palau Minister

The Minister of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development of Palau, Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl, has stated that significant opportunities exist for collaboration between the private sectors of Palau and the Maldives.

Speaking at the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Global Business Network Forum, Minister Tmetuchl described the event as a vital platform for strengthening ties between small island nations. He noted that such partnerships play a crucial role in supporting island development and fostering sustainable growth.

The minister stressed that major initiatives require active private sector involvement. He explained that forums bringing together businesses, governments, and civil society facilitate dialogue, encourage new investments, and enhance intergovernmental cooperation.

Highlighting ongoing joint efforts, Minister Tmetuchl pointed to Four Seasons Resorts as a prime example of successful private sector collaboration. The luxury resort brand, which maintains a substantial presence in the Maldives, has expanded operations to develop a resort in Palau.

Under an arrangement facilitated by the Maldivian government, students and trainees from Palau receive opportunities to gain practical work experience at Four Seasons properties in the Maldives. Minister Tmetuchl noted that these trainees return to Palau with valuable skills that help advance the nation’s domestic tourism industry.

The minister also referenced discussions held during the forum regarding the application of artificial intelligence (AI), human resource development, and the exchange of innovative ideas across small island states. He expressed confidence that modern technology enables small island nations to collaborate effectively without requiring continuous physical gatherings.
