The position became vacant following the resignation of former Commissioner General Hassan Zareer, who stepped down after being appointed Minister of Finance and State-Owned Enterprises.

Following a public call for applications, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted two nominees to Parliament: Fathimath Ameeza and Mohamed Haleem Abdulla.

The parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs assessed both candidates before recommending Ameeza for the post. The committee awarded her a score of 92.44 percent, while Haleem received 82.89 percent. The committee said both candidates were qualified for the role.

After the committee submitted its report, Parliament voted separately on each nominee before approving Ameeza’s appointment.

Ameeza currently serves as MIRA’s Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation. She holds a Master’s degree in Accounting from Monash University in Australia.
