The Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee convened to discuss the state of national finances in a closed-door session today, barring reporters from attending.
The committee had originally planned to conduct an inquiry into the nation’s financial status by summoning Minister of Finance Mohamed Shafeeq.
However, Maamgili MP and committee chair Qasim Ibrahim informed attendees that the minister was unable to attend due to health reasons but, the ministry provided the requested information in written form.
During the session, Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim reportedly proposed closing the meeting to the public and media, citing the sensitive nature of the information being discussed. He indicated that the minister had submitted the information under the condition of confidentiality.
According to reports, seven out of the eleven committee members supported Nazim’s suggestion, leading to the decision to close the meeting to the public.
