The next sitting of Parliament has been postponed for a further week, according to the Parliament Office.
Parliament had been scheduled to resume tomorrow following a week-long adjournment. However, officials announced today that the recess has been extended and the next sitting will now take place on Monday next week.
The second parliamentary session of the year began on Monday. At the conclusion of that day’s proceedings, the Speaker informed members that the House would reconvene on Monday this week. The Parliament Office later confirmed that the break had been extended by an additional week.
The postponement comes after a week during which many parliamentarians were involved in campaigning for the by-election in the Hithadhoo North constituency.
The by-election was won by opposition candidate Abdulla Sodiq, the former Mayor of Addu City, who defeated Ahmed Saeed, the candidate representing the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
Under parliamentary rules, sittings are scheduled to continue until August.
The rules stipulate that the first parliamentary session of each year should run from 1 February to 15 May. This year’s first session, however, was delayed until last month amid efforts to remove Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim from the position of Deputy Speaker.
However, Nazim resigned from the post approximately 30 minutes before Parliament was due to convene on 31 May.
