Parliamentary Committee Approves Dr Aishath Rameela as HRCM President

The Parliamentary Committee has approved Dr Aishath Rameela as the new President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Dr Rameela was appointed as a member of the HRCM on 3 December 2025 following the expiration of the term of Mariyam Muna. She was subsequently nominated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to serve as President of the Commission, subject to parliamentary approval.
The committee unanimously endorsed her nomination at a meeting held on 5 January. An extraordinary sitting of Parliament has now been scheduled for the submission and consideration of the committee’s report.
Dr Rameela is a senior public servant with extensive experience in government. She previously served as the first Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare under the current administration but resigned from the post in December 2024 due to health reasons.
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives currently consists of five members, including Vice-President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, along with members Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, Ahmed Maqsoom, and Dr Aishath Rameela.
