Residents of Vinares flats have initiated a petition urging President Mohamed Muizzu to expedite the promised reduction in rent, in the second phase of Hulhumale.

These flats were priced higher under the middle-class housing program initiated by the previous government, with down payments ranging from MVR 375,000 to 500,000.

President Muizzu had pledged to lower the monthly rent, which currently stands at over MVR 16,000, during his presidential campaign. However, there is growing apprehension among some residents as the promise was not explicitly mentioned within the first 100 days of the new government.

In response to these concerns, a letter has been submitted to President Muizzu, signed by approximately 100 individuals, outlining their disappointment that the rent reduction commitment was not included in the initial 100-day agenda.

The letter, while expressing disappointment, also conveyed confidence in President Muizzu’s commitment to fulfilling his promise promptly.

It requested that the monthly rent for Winners’ flats should not exceed MVR 8,000, including maintenance fees, and urged that the down payment should not exceed MVR 100,000. Additionally, the letter sought exemption from rent for the first three months.

Residents remain hopeful that the President will address these concerns and expedite the fulfillment of the promised reductions in rent and down payment for Vinares flats.
