The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) attended 1,150 court hearings in May, according to figures released by the office on Monday.
The number represents a significant decline from April, when prosecutors attended 2,710 hearings.
The statistics show that the PGO received 143 cases during May. Prosecutors also provided 447 advisories to investigative agencies and filed 263 charges with the courts.
In April, the office received 190 cases, issued 552 advisories to investigative agencies and filed 232 charges. Prosecutors attended 2,710 hearings during the month.
The latest figures indicate a decrease in the number of new cases received and advisories issued, while the number of charges filed increased compared with the previous month.
The release of the statistics comes amid continued attention on the prosecutorial system following an audit of prosecutorial work conducted between 2018 and 2021. The audit found that the PGO did not routinely review remand orders issued by the Criminal Court for suspects held in detention for prolonged periods while awaiting trial.
The government has since stated that efforts are underway to identify a legal solution to address the issue of extended pre-trial detention.
