PNC Highlights Reformative Actions of Muizzu
The People’s National Congress (PNC), the ruling party in the Maldives, has praised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration for its efforts to advance democratic reforms.
In a statement released on International Day of Democracy, yesterday, the PNC commended the President’s comprehensive policies, asserting that they will herald a new chapter in Maldivian democracy.
The statement noted that significant constitutional and administrative reforms are still pending, despite the fact that over 16 years have elapsed since the introduction of a multi-party system in the Maldives.
The PNC highlighted several key reforms initiated by President Muizzu, including:
- Capping the number of parliamentarians to prevent inflation in their numbers with each election.
- Consolidating major elections to be held concurrently.
- Ensuring the Maldives’ sovereignty by prohibiting foreign military presence.
- Implementing a Maldives-first policy to prioritise national interests in decision-making.
- Ending undue influence on the judiciary and independent institutions to safeguard their autonomy.
- Strengthening local councils’ financial stability to bolster the decentralisation system.
- The PNC believes these measures will enhance the Maldives’ democratic processes and positively impact the government’s effectiveness.
Additionally, the party praised President Muizzu for his efforts to end the cycle of personal grievances and animosity that has long plagued the political landscape, highlighting his commitment to setting a constructive example in political conduct.
