The People’s National Congress (PNC) has opened applications for prospective candidates seeking to contest the upcoming Hithadhoo North by-election under the party’s ticket.
According to the ruling party, interested individuals must submit their nominations by 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, 19 April. Applications are to be filed through the party’s candidate portal, as announced on its official social media platforms.
The by-election follows a ruling by the Supreme Court declaring the Hithadhoo North parliamentary seat vacant. The court determined that former MP Mohamed Shinan had failed to settle a court-ordered debt, thereby disqualifying him from holding the seat.
PNC stated that if multiple applicants meet the eligibility criteria set by its Technical Committee on Elections, a primary election will be held to determine the party’s candidate.

Applicants are required to submit all necessary documentation, including criminal and debt records, in line with procedures established by the Elections Commission. Candidates must also fulfil all legal requirements and be registered members of the party, or have applied for membership in accordance with the Commission’s guidelines.
The party confirmed that only those listed in the Congress Party register maintained by the Elections Commission, or those who applied for membership before 6:00 p.m. on 13 April, will be eligible to vote in the primary. A list of eligible voters is expected to be published on 20 April.
The PNC primary for the Hithadhoo North by-election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 25 April, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
The candidate selected through this process will represent the party in the forthcoming by-election.
