Police Apprehend Taxi Driver Linked to Prostitution Network on Telegram

Police have apprehended the driver of a taxi allegedly involved in facilitating a prostitution operation operating through a Telegram channel.

The individual, identified as a 60-year-old Maldivian male, was taken into custody on March 30, according to a spokesperson from the police department.

Following an initial remand period of 15 days, the suspect’s detention was prolonged, the spokesperson added.

During a press briefing held on March 17, law enforcement authorities disclosed ongoing investigations into Telegram channels utilised for illicit activities, including prostitution and drug trade. It was revealed that these channels boasted a significant following of over 7,000 individuals.

As part of their inquiry, the police have already made two arrests linked to the operation of these channels, which have reportedly been operational since April of the previous year.

Moreover, authorities revealed that a specific taxi had been identified as the mode of transportation utilised by individuals involved in the prostitution network.
