Police Commissioner Orders “Strictest Action” Against Repeat Traffic Offenders

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohamed, last night instructed relevant authorities to take strict action “at the highest level” against individuals who repeatedly violate general road safety rules and traffic laws.

Following the recent increase in fatal accidents in Malé caused by dangerous driving, Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed stated in a message that the police have decided to implement “special measures” against traffic violators, effective immediately.

“The objective of these measures is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all citizens and to take the strictest possible actions to prevent such dangerous incidents that repeatedly occur due to a few individuals,” he said.

The CP’s message stated that police sections have been instructed to execute these measures “at the highest degree” in cooperation with relevant institutions.

“These measures will be enforced in the Greater Malé area as well as across the islands in the atolls,” CP Ahmed Mohamed added.

The Police Commissioner also requested the assistance and cooperation of all Maldivians during the implementation of these measures.

These measures come in the wake of a recent accident in Malé that claimed the life of a young woman.

The victim was among three people injured in a collision between two motorcycles on Sosun Magu on the 20th of this month. She passed away last Friday while undergoing medical treatment.

Aishath Mahida, 26, of Magumathigee, Sh. Foakaidhoo, died in the crash. Police arrested Maahu Hassan, 21, of Asseyri, Th. Dhiyamigili, in connection with the case. He has been remanded in custody for 15 days for investigation purposes.

Police informed the court that Maahu had been stopped and fined four times this year alone for driving without a license.
