The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has conducted its first taxi driver training and refresher programme of the year, aimed at improving road safety awareness and compliance with land transport regulations.

The programme, organised by the MPS Road Safety Awareness and Prevention Department, targeted both new and existing taxi drivers. It focused on familiarising participants with land transport laws and regulatory requirements governing taxi services.

During the sessions, officers provided guidance on drivers’ responsibilities in preventing traffic accidents and responding appropriately to incidents on the road. The programme also addressed common safety issues and best practices to enhance overall road safety.

MPS said a total of 247 drivers took part in the programme, including 172 new taxi drivers and 75 currently operating drivers. The training was held over four days, from 18 to 21 January.

The police service said such programmes form part of its ongoing efforts to promote safer driving practices and strengthen awareness among commercial drivers across the country.
