Despite the President Elect’s request, the Maldives Police Services have promoted five officers to Assistant Commissioner and announced multiple other promotions, just 48 hours before the current administration’s end.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed, set to retire imminently, has formally informed President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu of the promotions within the executive echelons of the police force.
Additional promotions for several other officers are slated to be announced by the end of the day.
The identities of the officers receiving these promotions remain undisclosed at this time.
CP Hameed clarified to President Elect Muizzu that the decision to promote these officers was made back in August. The implementation was delayed due to the proximity of the presidential election, with the force aiming to avoid actions that could be interpreted as exerting undue influence on the electoral process.
The communication to the President Elect also revealed that a meeting had been requested the previous week to discuss promotions and other pertinent matters.
In the event of any need for review or the emergence of conflicts, Hameed asserted that these matters should be addressed through the appropriate channels.
Despite the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) earlier directive to halt these promotions, the Prosecutor General (PG) advised the Police that the order did not carry legal weight, prompting the force to proceed with the promotions as planned.
