Police Quarterly Stats Show Over 300 Road Accidents in March 2024

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has unveiled its quarterly statistics, spotlighting a notable surge in road accidents during the initial four months of 2024, with March registering over 300 recorded incidents.

In terms of traffic accidents, the figures for January stood at 263, showing a slight rise to 268 in February, escalating further to 301 in March, before experiencing a decline to 212 in April, indicating a fluctuating trend across the quarter.

Other reported crimes depict a mixed picture. Sexual offences showed a minor fluctuation with January recording 30 incidents, followed by a dip to 27 in February, a further decrease to 26 in March, and a return to 30 in April. 

Conversely, domestic violence exhibited a declining pattern from 28 cases in January to 15 in April, with fluctuations in between. Assault cases saw a notable peak in March with 78 incidents, while experiencing a decrease to 52 in April. Similarly, drug-related offences displayed a gradual decline from January’s 151 cases to 109 in April.

Moving on to other categories, vandalism cases fluctuated throughout the quarter, with January recording 61 incidents, dipping to 53 in February, rising to 68 in March, before dropping to 55 in April. 

Theft incidents showed a similar pattern of fluctuation, starting at 333 in January, declining to 270 in February, rising again to 329 in March, and finally reverting to 270 in April. Lost item reports maintained a relatively stable trend with minor fluctuations across the months, whereas robbery incidents fluctuated within a narrower range, from 43 in January to 36 in April.
