Police Refer Cases Against Six Maafushi Men to Prosecutor General’s Office

Police have forwarded cases against six individuals to the Prosecutor General’s Office, seeking charges over allegations that they obstructed police officers and assaulted them during a drug-related operation in K. Maafushi.

Police said the investigation was completed and the cases were sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office on 10 September.

The six individuals were arrested in connection with an incident on 11 August, when police officers were searching a person suspected of possessing and using narcotics in Maafushi at around 1:00 pm. According to police, officers were obstructed in the course of their duties and assaulted during the operation.

The first person arrested was 18-year-old Mohamed Shabin Shujau of Heaven, K. Maafushi, who was taken into custody at the scene on 11 August. He was subsequently presented before the Maafushi Magistrate’s Court for a remand decision and released under conditions. Police have appealed the conditional release at the High Court.

The other five individuals were arrested under court orders in connection with the case.

They are:

• Abdulla Nihad, 30, of Starline, K. Maafushi, arrested on 14 August (remand expires on 4 October).
• Ibrahim Suneez, 41, of Green Park, K. Maafushi, arrested on 15 August (remand expires on 23 September).
• Ahmed Ahnaf Asfaq, 24, of Vaareyvilla, K. Maafushi, arrested on 19 August (remand expires on 11 October).
• Mohamed Shaihan, 21, of Green Park, K. Maafushi, arrested on 28 August (remand expires on 27 September).
• Hassan Nabeel, 32, of Faiza Manzil, K. Maafushi, arrested on 29 August, who was released after being brought before court today, 21 September, for a detention review.

The cases have now been submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office for a decision on prosecution.
