Police Report Decline in Scam Cases and Financial Losses in June

Scam cases reported to the Maldives Police Anti-Scam Centre declined in June compared to the previous month, according to statistics released by the police on Monday.
A total of 122 scam cases were reported in June, 35 fewer than the 157 cases recorded in May.

The amount of money lost to scams also decreased significantly. Reported losses fell from MVR 2.27 million in May to MVR 914,698 in June.
Police recovered MVR 598,678 during the month. Of the cases reported in June, 87 were solved, with funds recovered in 34 of those cases.
Online business-related scams remained the most common type of fraud, accounting for 74 cases. Identity-related fraud was the second most reported category with 13 cases, followed by seven money laundering-related scam cases.
Police have previously reported that more than MVR 33 million has been lost to scams across the Maldives since last year, with more than 2,700 cases recorded nationwide.
