President Muizzu has called on the United Nations to restore global trust through accountability and consistent enforcement of international law, cautioning that geopolitical fractures and selective diplomacy disproportionately affect vulnerable populations and small island states.
In an official statement marking United Nations Day, Dr Muizzu reflected on the organisation’s founding charter established 81 years ago, observing that its core principles guarantee peace, dignity, and sovereignty to all nations, regardless of size or geopolitical influence.
However, the President noted that escalating international rivalries and uneven adherence to global statutes have eroded confidence in multilateral institutions. He pointed to the ongoing crisis in Palestine as clear evidence of the human toll caused by these institutional shortcomings.
Dr Muizzu also highlighted the acute economic vulnerabilities facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He stated that unsustainable debt burdens, coupled with unequal access to international finance and technological resources, continue to hinder development and undermine climate resilience across developing island territories.
Addressing the Maldives’ national trajectory, Dr Muizzu stressed that the country requires tangible resources to match its domestic goals. He identified robust international partnerships as an essential mechanism for economic diversification, human capital investment, and safeguarding against external shocks, reaffirming the island nation’s target to achieve developed-country status by 2040.
Concluding his address, Dr Muizzu urged the United Nations to ensure that more powerful nations do not dictate the outcomes of smaller states, pledging that the Maldives will continue to advocate for international justice, territorial sovereignty, and multilateral cooperation.
