President Extends Condolences on Passing of Ibrahim Rashad, Honoured for Longtime Public Service

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Ibrahim Rashad and to those who worked alongside him. The distinguished State dignitary and recipient of the Honorary Title for Longtime Public Service passed away this afternoon at the age of 78, following a prolonged illness.

In a post on X, the President described the late Ibrahim Rashad as a visionary and exemplary leader who carried out every State responsibility with diligence, integrity, and foresight.

The President’s Office stated that he was “an invaluable and deeply experienced veteran whose pioneering efforts more than two decades ago modernised public administration and enhanced service delivery at a time when technological resources were limited.”

Stated by the President’s Office, Ibrahim Rashad’s steadfast adherence to institutional principles and his unwavering honesty earned him the enduring trust of both the public and State leadership.

Over a career spanning more than 45 years, Ibrahim Rashad served the State in numerous senior capacities. He was appointed Atoll Chief of Faadhippolhu Atoll and Kolhumadulu Atoll, and later served as Commissioner of Elections for over six years. He concluded his public service as Minister of State and Principal Collector of Customs, retiring on 4 September 2008.

According to the President’s Office, Ibrahim Rashad began his career on 26 June 1961 as a clerk at the Ministry of Trade and Commerce. He went on to serve as a clerk at the Ministry of Education, secretary at the Ministry of Finance, and secretary at the Airport Office. He also held positions as English Secretary for the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and Radio Maldives, and took on corporate and regional administration roles as manager at the State Trading Organisation (STO) and as Legal Counsel at the Northern Regional Office.

His extensive portfolio included key leadership roles within the Ministry of Provincial Affairs, the Ministry of Atolls Administration, and provincial development units. He contributed to regional development as Senior Under-Secretary, Vice-Chairman of the Atolls Development Advisory Board, Projects Director, and Director of the Selected Islands Development Unit. He also served as Director General of the Department of Elections and Managing Director at Maldives Post Limited.
