President Honours Engineering Professionals at the 2026 Engineers’ Awards

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presided over the Engineers’ Award 2026 ceremony at Barceló Nasandhura on Thursday evening, marking a significant milestone in state recognition for the country’s engineering professionals. 

As per the press release by the President’s Office, the accoldade was introduced to honour engineers who have delivered exceptional service and set high benchmarks within the sector, highlighting the crucial role of construction and engineering in driving national economic growth.

Organised by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, the ceremony celebrated accomplishments across ten distinct categories. President Muizzu personally presented the evening’s primary accolades, bestowing the Engineer of the Year Award upon Dr Furqan Ibrahim for his outstanding professional contributions.

The President also presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to three distinguished figures, honouring Abdul Shakoor Solih alongside the late Ahmed Mahureen and the late Mohamed Rasheed, who both received the accolade posthumously. Additional honours presented during the event included the Sustainability Champion Award, the Engineering Innovation, Technology, Education, and Research Award, the Young Engineer Award, the Student Innovator Award, the Community Impact Award, and the Women in Engineering Award.

President Muizzu initially announced plans for the national awards during his address on 30 August 2025 to mark the country’s inaugural National Engineers’ Day. The administration designated 30 August for the annual observance to coincide with the opening anniversary of the Sinamalé Bridge—which is considered the largest infrastructure project in Maldivian history—establishing a permanent platform to celebrate the nation’s engineering community.
