The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure awarded the shore protection project to MTCC (Maldives Transport and Contracting Company) in November 2021. As part of this initiative, MTCC successfully built a 137-meter revetment along the northeast shores of Kolhufushi and an additional 382-meter revetment along the southern shores.
In order to combat erosion, the state-owned company also constructed two breakwaters and carried out beach replenishment in affected areas. Furthermore, MTCC developed two designated public swimming areas, measuring 30 meters by 60 meters each.
In parallel, the clean water supply network project was made possible through a USD 3 million line-of-credit provided by the EXIM Bank of India. SMC Infrastructure Private Limited, an Indian company, undertook this venture. The project encompassed the establishment of a water collection tank and storage tank, along with the installation of a reverse osmosis (RO) plant to ensure clean water supply.
To support the operational aspects, an administrative building, equipped with a laboratory for water analysis, was also constructed. Additionally, the company installed water pipes and water meters in households and other buildings, ensuring efficient water distribution throughout the island.

These development projects demonstrate the commitment of the government and international partners to improving the infrastructure and quality of life for the residents of Kolhufushi. The shore protection project safeguards the island against coastal erosion, while the clean water supply network project addresses the essential need for access to clean and safe drinking water.
The successful completion of these initiatives marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the living standards and overall well-being of the people in Kolhufushi, Meemu Atoll.
