President Muizzu Arrives in Utheemu for National Day Celebrations

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed have arrived in Ha. Utheemu to participate in official activities marking National Day.

The President will attend the National Day ceremony at 10am today, where he will present the National Award of Honour and National Award of Recognition.

Three individuals and one organisation will receive the National Award of Honour this year, while seven individuals and one company will receive the National Award of Recognition. A National Service Award will also be presented posthumously to one individual.

During his visit, President Muizzu will inaugurate the newly developed Boduthakurufaanu Memorial Gateway in Utheemu and open a venue dedicated to telling the story of Boduthakurufaanu’s struggle to liberate the Maldives from Portuguese rule.

National Day activities in Utheemu began on Friday with a flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by fireworks in the evening.

National Day is observed annually on the first day of Rabi’ al-Awwal to commemorate Al-Sultan al-Ghaazee Mohamed Thakurufaanu al-A’uzam, widely known as Boduthakurufaanu, and his liberation of the Maldives from Portuguese rule.
