President Muizzu Urges Shift in Youth Perception of Politics, Denies Political Retaliation

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for a shift in how young people view politics, asserting that political work is inherently clean when national interest is placed ahead of partisan agendas.

Speaking at the People’s National Congress (PNC) ceremony last night, President Muizzu acknowledged that many young Maldivians currently view political activity as “very dirty.” However, he argued that politics itself is not inherently flawed and urged political actors to set a better example within the country’s democracy.

“If Maldivians prioritise the nation, the interests of political parties will naturally come second,” President Muizzu stated, adding that exemplary leadership is essential to restoring youth trust in democratic processes.

During his address, the President also defended his administration’s record on civil liberties and political freedoms. He stated that his government has not engaged in acts of political retaliation and pointed out that no political leaders have been jailed under his tenure.

President Muizzu asserted that opposition figures and political leaders can now engage in political activities without fear. Touching on public gatherings, he noted that obstacles to freedom of assembly have been removed, allowing citizens to gather in most public places without prior notification.

Addressing freedom of expression, the President affirmed that individuals remain free to speak openly, provided their speech remains within legal boundaries and aligns with Islamic principles.
