President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that he will be competing in the upcoming presidential election as part of a coalition with the largest membership ever recorded, during the MDP campaign event at Izzuddin School yesterday.

According to President Solih, his coalition boasts a staggering 77,700 members, drawing support from the Adhaalath Party, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and the MDP itself. This announcement comes as a direct response to persistent claims made by the opposition, particularly the prominent rival party known as The Democrats, which have alleged that the President has been left isolated following a fallout with previous coalition partners.

President Solih initially ascended to power as the MDP candidate, leading a coalition that included the Jumhooree Party, the Adhaalath Party, and the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).

However, the Jumhooree Party has since decided to contest the presidential election separately, with their party leader Qasim Ibrahim running as their presidential candidate. Additionally, the MRM, while still a member of the coalition, has not yet reached a decision regarding the formation of a coalition with President Solih.

The formation of The Democrats arose amid controversy surrounding the MDP’s presidential primary, which led to a group of members supporting Speaker Mohamed Nasheed defecting from the party.

During a meeting held on Wednesday night to establish The Democrats, Speaker Nasheed hinted at President Solih’s perceived isolation in the presidential race, emphasizing that The Democrats hold the majority of the party’s members, encompassing approximately 80 percent.
