The Road Development Corporation has commenced survey work for the road development and modernisation project in Baarah.
The government has prioritised road upgrade projects across the atolls as part of broader efforts to accelerate regional development.
The project, awarded to RDC under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP), carries an investment of USD 129.52 million and is scheduled to be completed within 1,280 days.
Speaking to Public Service Media News, RDC stated that survey activities required for the implementation phase are currently underway. The project will focus on the island’s ring road and will not include inland roads.
Under the initiative, 7.56 kilometres of road will be paved. RDC said detailed topographical, geotechnical and hydrological surveys are being carried out as part of the preparatory work.
The corporation also confirmed that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be conducted alongside the development of detailed road designs that include a drainage system.
Additional works planned under the project include levelling utility junctions, installing road signs, speed breakers and traffic lights, and laying cables to support street lighting infrastructure. Kerbstones and pedestrian pavements will also be developed.
The agreement for the project was signed on 26 March 2024. RDC said the upgraded road network is expected to improve transportation and accessibility for residents of Baarah.
