A regional meeting focused on combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling has begun in the Maldives, bringing together representatives from several South Asian countries and international organisations.
The meeting, scheduled to run from 12 to 14 May, is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
According to organisers, the meeting aims to strengthen regional cooperation, improve the collection, analysis and sharing of information related to illegal migration and trafficking, and enhance efforts to identify trafficking cases and protect victims. The discussions are also expected to focus on supporting investigations and developing stronger policies to address trafficking and migrant smuggling.
Representatives from six countries are taking part in the meeting, including delegates from India, Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Maldivian participants include officials from the Maldives Police Service, Maldives Immigration and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Office.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, State Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Dr Abdulla Phairoosch highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, evidence-based approaches and coordinated efforts in preventing crimes such as human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The ministry said the meeting is expected to improve institutional capacity, strengthen national information-sharing systems and deepen cooperation with regional and international partners in addressing cross-border crimes.
