It is important to note that registration on the National Disability Registry is voluntary. However, registering offers numerous benefits for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and their families. By enrolling, individuals can gain access to financial assistance, therapeutic services, assistive devices, and other services and schemes specifically designed to support PWDs, including housing facilities and loans.
The establishment of the National Disability Registry is mandated by Clause 14 of the Disability Act (8/2010), which requires the creation and maintenance of a Register of Persons with Disabilities. The primary objective of this registry is to assist in planning and providing services that cater to the unique needs of PWDs and their families. All information collected during registration is treated as confidential and will only be used for the purposes of improving support for PWDs.
In accordance with Clause 14 of the Disability Act (8/2010), a Person with Disability (PWD) is defined as an individual who experiences long-term physical, psychological, sensory, or intellectual impairments that significantly limit their full and effective participation in society. The Disability Act (8/2010) and its accompanying Regulations outline eight specific types of disabilities, which include visual disability, hearing and speech disability, physical disability, intellectual disability, psychological disability, autism, learning disability, and multiple disability.
Individuals who fall under any of these disability categories are encouraged to register on the National Disability Registry to ensure that they receive the necessary support and services to enhance their quality of life. By compiling accurate and comprehensive data, the registry will play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and empowering individuals with disabilities throughout the Maldives.
