Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliament Group leader Ahmed Saleem, re-elected for the Eydhafushi constituency for the fourth consecutive term, has pledged that the People’s National Congress (PNC) will uphold parliamentary integrity and inclusivity, avoiding the misuse of their supermajority status in the upcoming 20th parliament session.

Addressing the Mental Health Bill during today’s parliamentary session, Saleem emphasised a commitment to fair treatment, contrasting with what he characterised as past instances of marginalisation when the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held the majority.

Saleem alleged that during previous sessions, a dearth of opposition representation led to feelings of neglect and psychological strain among minority members.

Saleem further accused the MDP of wielding power to intimidate and harass members, asserting that such tactics have contributed to the party’s diminishing influence.

Following Sunday’s parliamentary elections, where the ruling PNC coalition secured a supermajority, Saleem expressed confidence that all parliamentary voices, including minorities, would be respected and included in legislative proceedings.

Saleem’s assurances come amid heightened scrutiny over parliamentary conduct and signal a concerted effort towards fostering a more equitable and inclusive legislative landscape.
