The government has announced that 40 per cent of the dredging work for the second phase of land reclamation and shore protection at GDh. Thinadhoo Industrial Zone has been completed.

The project, contracted to MTCC, involves reclaiming three hectares of land in the island’s industrial zone, laying 32,647 cubic metres of sand revetment, and constructing revetments along 254 metres of shoreline. It also includes the construction of an 89-metre pre-cast reinforced concrete retaining wall, the installation of lights at the harbour and canal, and the building of a timber jetty measuring three metres wide and 47 metres long.

In addition, land reclamation will take place over a two-hectare picnic island area, where 474 metres of revetment will be constructed, and groynes will be installed along a 50-metre stretch.

GDh. Thinadhoo, home to more than 10,000 residents, already utilises its industrial zone for a range of economic activities. MTCC stated that the expansion is expected to facilitate further development, including the establishment of new factories.

The project was handed over to MTCC in June 2023 at a cost of MVR 53.41 million and is scheduled for completion within 300 days.
