Earlier today, a session commenced at 11:00 am to address the resolution; however, the agenda item could not be concluded by the scheduled end time of 2:30 pm. Despite this, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah, continued presiding over the session until the specified time.
Given that parliamentary sessions customarily conclude at 2:30 pm, Eva announced that the proceedings would resume tomorrow. Following the announcement of the session’s conclusion, a new session was promptly scheduled for 4:00 pm. It remains unclear whether this meeting aligns with Eva’s guidance.
The responsibility of including the no-confidence motion on the agenda lies with the Secretary General of Parliament, Fathimath Filza. Contrary to this standard practice, Eva asserted today that she would personally handle the agenda and communicate the details to the members.
Members of the majority party in parliament argue that Eva prematurely halted the session, a breach of parliamentary regulations. They allege that this action was taken to forestall Nasheed’s potential removal from office.
