Shahid Announces Bid for MDP Presidential Primary Ahead of 2028 Election, Resigns as MDP President

Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has announced his candidacy for the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential primary ahead of the 2028 presidential election, and subsequently resigned as the party’s president. 

Shahid made the announcement at a gathering held in Addu City’s Hithadhoo specifically to launch his candidacy, saying Maldivians are facing severe hardship amid economic and social challenges.

He said the MDP is the only party capable of resolving the country’s current challenges, adding that MDP members have been behind the changes demanded by the public.

He also expressed confidence that he could unite and work with MDP members across different viewpoints within the party.

“Therefore, with the resolve to win the 2028 presidential election for the MDP, and seeking strength from Almighty Allah, I have decided to contest the MDP presidential primary and hereby announce my candidacy,” he added.

Shahid is not the only MDP figure to have expressed interest in contesting the 2028 presidential election. Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has also expressed interest in running for the presidency.

Recent media reports have also claimed that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to contest the 2028 MDP presidential election. However, MV+ has not been able to independently verify the reports.
