Single Parents Receive Over MVR 17 Million from NSPA This September

The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) distributed MVR 17.15 million in financial assistance to single parents living in poverty in September, while 84 parents and 154 children were removed from the single-parent allowance programme.
According to statistics released by NSPA, financial assistance was provided to 3,313 parents, covering 5,708 children.
The agency also provided MVR 193,500 in assistance to 103 guardians caring for 136 children living in poverty who do not receive parental support.
Separately, 651 individuals received financial assistance to purchase food, with total expenditure amounting to MVR 26,040.
The latest figures also show that 84 parents and 154 children were removed from the single-parent financial assistance programme. In August, 39 registered parents and 80 children were removed from the scheme, according to figures released by NSPA.
The figures do not specify the reasons for the removals.
Meanwhile, the government has increased the financial assistance available to eligible single parents, with the revised rates having taken effect on 1 January 2026.
Under the third amendment to the Regulation on Providing Financial Assistance to Single Parents, eligible parents will receive MVR 3,000 per child for up to four children.
The revised scheme sets a maximum monthly payment of MVR 12,000 per parent and an annual cap of MVR 144,000.
