The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has revealed its plans to introduce six new constituencies for the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024. According to the ECM, the final report, including details of the additional constituencies, will be released in December of this year.

The determination of parliamentary constituencies is based on population proportions, as outlined in the Constitution. The constitutional provision mandates the election of a separate member for every 5,000 individuals.

Ismail Habeeb, the Vice President of the ECM, stated that the commission is currently focused on the presidential election as well as the forthcoming 2024 parliamentary elections. As per Constituency Determination Act, the ECM has approved the changes to the 2024 Parliamentary Constituencies. Consequently, six new constituencies will be added to the parliament.

The additional seats for the 2024 Parliament are allocated as follows:

  • Two seats for Male’ City
  • One seat for Addu City
  • One seat for the Baa Atoll
  • One seat for the Male’ Atoll
  • One seat for the GA Atoll

Under the General Elections Act, the ECM is required to announce the constituencies and population ratios for the next term at least 10 months before the expiry of the existing Parliament’s term. Habeeb mentioned that the commission has been diligently working on this matter since February of this year.

Habeeb further added that the commission aims to release its report on the proposed changes before the 28th of the following month. The final and comprehensive report will be made available in December of this year.
