Siyam to Chair Parliamentary Sitting for Speaker Appointment

Meedhoo MP-elect Ahmed Siyam Mohamed is set to preside over the upcoming parliamentary sitting tomorrow, overseeing the appointment of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament following the swearing-in of members for the 20th parliamentary assembly.

Scheduled for 10:15hrs tomorrow morning, the session will witness the election of both the Speaker and Vice Speaker subsequent to the oath-taking ceremony of elected parliamentarians, which is slated for 09:00hrs the same morning.

Siyam’s designation as the chair of the session for electing the Speaker and Vice Speaker marks his fifth term within the legislative body. Notably, he had previously chaired a similar session during the 19th parliamentary assembly.

The 20th assembly will be represented by a total of 93 members, with over 70 belonging to the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). 

The party has previously declared its nominees for the positions, with Fonadhoo MP-elect Abdulraheem Abdulla put forward for the Speaker’s role, and Dhangethi MP-elect Ahmed Nazim nominated for Vice Speaker.
