South Galolhu MP Calls on WAMCO to Explain Waste Entering Hulhumalé Lagoon

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP for South Galolhu Mohamed Ibrahim has called on WAMCO to explain why waste is ending up in the Hulhumalé lagoon and polluting the reef.
Ibrahim sent a letter to WAMCO Managing Director Mujthaba Jaleel today, raising concerns that waste management activities in Hulhumalé are resulting in rubbish entering the Hulhumalé lagoon.

The MP said WAMCO has a responsibility to ensure its waste management operations do not cause harmful effects on residents or the wider community.
Ibrahim asked WAMCO to explain the main reason waste is falling into the lagoon, including why rubbish is falling from waste transportation vehicles or machinery.
He also asked whether WAMCO has taken measures to minimise the environmental impact of the pollution and sought details of a long-term solution to the odour reportedly coming from the polluted reef.
The MP further asked whether the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken any action against WAMCO over the issue and whether WAMCO and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) are working together to improve waste management and cleanliness in Hulhumalé.
Ibrahim submitted photographs and video evidence of the areas he identified as polluted along with his letter.
