Sri Lankan PM and Speaker Pay Courtesy Calls on President Muizzu
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya and Speaker of Parliament Dr Jagath Wickramaratne paid courtesy calls on President Mohamed Muizzu today during his state visit to Sri Lanka, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across key sectors.

During their meet today, both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation across key sectors. Discussions focused on expanding collaboration in hospitality and tourism, healthcare, education, vocational training, and broader socio-economic development.
President Muizzu commended Sri Lanka’s efforts to recover from recent socio-economic challenges, including the impact of Cyclone Ditwah. Both leaders also acknowledged the significant contributions of the Sri Lankan community in the Maldives and the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka to the development of both nations.

The Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker also paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu. Their discussions highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries, encompassing both government relations and strong people-to-people connections.
The President and the Speaker emphasised the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation through existing mechanisms, including the Maldives–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Sri Lanka–Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Association. They discussed enhancing institutional partnerships through capacity-building initiatives and knowledge-sharing between parliamentary bodies.
Both sides agreed to explore further avenues for cooperation and to facilitate future exchanges between lawmakers, reflecting a shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations.
The Maldives and Sri Lanka marked 60 years of formal diplomatic relations in July 2025.
President Muizzu is currently on a State Visit to Sri Lanka from 3 to 6 May 2026 at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka. He is accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
