STELCO Announces Island-Wide Smart Meter Installation Initiative

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has revealed its plan to install smart meters in all households across the islands.
The announcement was made during a press conference on Thursday by Managing Director Hussain Fahmy, who shared that the installation process will begin next month.
Fahmy outlined that the transition to smart meters is expected to be completed within the next three years, highlighting that the ongoing work on the smart grid is also nearing its final stages.
The Managing Director explained that the engines are managed through a specialised digital system, which enables remote operations such as switching transformers on and off, as well as conducting load calculations. He added that smart grids have already been installed across all islands, paving the way for the smart meter rollout.
“The integration of the smart grid and smart meters offers a comprehensive solution,” Fahmy noted.
Meanwhile, Fenaka Corporation, the company responsible for providing electricity across the Maldives, has already been installing and utilising smart meters in various locations for some time.
