State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced plans to rectify the issue concerning customers who settled their electricity bills prior to the government’s special discount announcement for the month of Ramadan.

Initially introduced by the government to alleviate the financial burden during the high-consumption period of Ramadan, the discount was applied to electricity and water bills.

However, due to the disparity between the Islamic lunar calendar observed during Ramadan and the Gregorian calendar used for billing cycles, only the first month’s bills saw the promised discounts.

Following the distribution of the second month’s bills, which lacked the anticipated discounts, public discontent prompted governmental intervention to extend the discount to cover these bills as well.

STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahumy, addressed the issue, assuring customers that corrected bills reflecting the discount were dispatched last night. Furthermore, customers who had already settled their bills would see adjustments in the subsequent billing cycle.

While the exact value of the total discounts for the second phase of Ramadan bills remains undisclosed, Fahumy previously disclosed that the initial round of discounts surpassed MVR 20 million.
