The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has warned that temporary power interruptions may occur across parts of the Greater Malé Area early Saturday morning as upgrade works are carried out at the Hulhumalé 50-megawatt power plant.

According to STELCO, the power plant will be shut down from 3:00am to 8:00am on Saturday, to facilitate critical upgrades to the station’s power system.

The company stated that the upgrade will allow additional power generation to be connected to the plant and increase the generation capacity of the Greater Malé electricity grid.

STELCO said electricity supply may need to be temporarily disconnected from certain areas if consumption exceeds available production capacity during the shutdown period. However, the company noted that the work is scheduled during off-peak hours, when electricity demand is at its lowest, in order to minimise disruptions.

The utility provider added that it aims to complete the work ahead of schedule and restore normal services as quickly as possible.

STELCO said any power interruptions during the maintenance period would be communicated through its social media platforms.
