STELCO Begins Electricity Grid Upgrade in Hulhumalé Phase II

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced that upgrading works on the electricity grid in Hulhumalé Phase II will begin today as part of efforts to improve the area’s power supply.

The company said it has officially taken over the management of the Phase II electricity network from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and is implementing measures to improve the quality, reliability and sustainability of electricity services.

According to STELCO, technical upgrading works on the electricity grid will be carried out from today until 31 July. The company advised that temporary power interruptions may occur in different parts of Phase II while the works are in progress.

STELCO apologised for any inconvenience and thanked customers for their cooperation, stating that the upgrades are necessary to improve the long-term reliability of the electricity supply.

Hulhumalé Phase II has experienced several prolonged power outages this year, particularly affecting residents of the Hiyaa towers and FDC flats. On 12 April, several residential towers were without electricity for around eight hours. A further outage occurred two weeks later, with power taking more than four hours to be fully restored.

STELCO has previously attributed power interruptions during development works in Phase II to damage to underground electricity cables caused by ongoing road construction.
