The Democrats (TD) party have criticised the “normalising” and trivialising of the May 6 terror attack in Male’ that left its leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed critically injured three years ago.

Today marks three years to the day Nasheed was attacked by an IED explosion while walking to his car parked on Majeedhee Magu from his private residence Kenereege, accompanied by his bodyguard.

In a press statement released today, the Democrats expressed concern and condemnation of the state for allowing such a dangerous terror attack on a high-ranking state official.

The party also condemned security services for not providing Nasheed with constitutionally mandated security despite the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) having intelligence of three prior plots to assassinate him.

“The trials of everyone except one who confessed have been delayed, some detainees have been released, some have not been convicted, and no one behind the attack has been found. It is a reality that shows the shameful state of the country. The Democrats also see it as an act of “normalizing” and trivialising serious issues.”

The Democrats called on the state authorities to look into the bomb terrorist attack on President Mohamed Nasheed and at its core, mete out due punishment to those involved and expedite justice for him.

Meanwhile, the parliament speaker and Mohamed Aslam urged the government to follow through on the recommendations set out by the inquiry into the attack by the parliament’s national security committee.

Speaker Aslam expressed his wishes for a Maldives free from religious extremism and violence.

The parliament submitted the inquiry report to the government in July 2021 during the tenure of former administration led by Maldivian Democratic Party.
