Hassan Latheef, a prominent figure within the party, was elected as the interim chairman. With his leadership, the Democrats aim to make a significant impact on the political landscape of the country.
The founder of the party, Hassan Latheef, addressed the attendees at the Ghiyasuddin School, where the rally took place. In his speech, he expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support received and emphasized the party’s commitment to promoting their core values.
Following the introductory speech, the members unanimously approved the party’s name, ‘The Democrats’, and a symbolic name, ‘Democrats’. This decision reflects the party’s vision of promoting democratic ideals and principles.
The Democrats also unveiled their official logo, which features an asterisk. According to Hassan Latheef, the logo represents coconut palms and corals, symbolizing resilience and adaptability.
In terms of visual identity, the party chose a color scheme consisting of soft blue (baby blue), white, and black. These colors were selected to convey a sense of unity, progress, and integrity.
The formation of the Democrats stems from the ‘Fikuregge Dhirun’ movement, initially founded by Nasheed after his defeat in the MDP presidential primary. Nasheed, who recently left the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to establish his own party, has yet to officially join the Democrats.
Looking ahead, the Democrats have announced their intention to participate in the upcoming presidential election. However, they have not reached a decision regarding their candidate for the election.
