The internal election aims to fill 35 key positions within the party, including the pivotal roles of party leader and deputy leaders. Notable contenders for the coveted position of party leader include Hussain Amr Mohamed Rashad, former managing director of the State Trading Organization (STO), and Hussain Latheef, the incumbent West Henveiru Member of Parliament and the party’s interim chairperson.
Within the party’s structure, two deputy leader positions are up for grabs, specifically those of youth deputy leader and woman deputy leader. The race for youth deputy leader features three candidates: Hussain Firushan, the incumbent Madaveli Member of Parliament, Mohamed Ansar, and Mohamed Alan. Simultaneously, two candidates, Mariyam Rehan Nazim and Aishath Alaika Adnan, are vying for the position of woman deputy leader.
It is noteworthy that the Democrats, officially registered as a political entity in July, emerges as a splinter group from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The new party aligns itself with the former MDP leader and Maldivian president, Mohamed Nasheed.
