The Democrats have issued a “Red” three-line whip urging members to vote against the Finance Committee’s report recommending increased salaries for key government officials.
Expressing their reservations, The Democrats released a press statement condemning the Parliamentary Committee’s decision. The party voiced concerns about the timing of the proposed salary increments, particularly during a period of economic fragility and uncertainty surrounding next year’s budget. The Democrats’ parliamentary group explicitly opposes the Committee’s stance, according to the released statement.
The party called on the MDP parliamentary group, which holds a substantial majority in both the House and the Committee, to exercise greater responsibility in their decision-making processes.
The Democrats parliamentary group issued a three-line whip to vote against the proposed salary increases. The party asserted its commitment to advocating for a more streamlined parliament to effectively control escalating state expenditure in the future.
Both the Democrats and the government have expressed shared concerns regarding the proposed salary increments. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has taken a proactive step by deciding to donate the surplus portion of his salary, underscoring the shared commitment to address the financial concerns surrounding the proposed raises.
