The Democrats Meet Muizzu for Potential Collaboration
The Democrats, a party founded by former President Mohamed Nasheed, have met with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to discuss potential collaborative efforts.
This meeting, held at the President’s Office, marks the second time President Muizzu has met with senior officials from The Democrats.
The Democrats expressed their desire to be included as a crucial ally in reform efforts and discussed various policies the administration could implement.
Despite the meeting’s focus on collaboration, The Democrats, led by Latheef, have been outspoken critics of President Muizzu’s administration. The party has also accused the administration of employment intimidation.
In the lead-up to the parliamentary election in April, The Democrats joined forces with the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) against the government. During the 19th parliament assembly, both parties had previously agreed to work together. Nasheed, who founded The Democrats after leaving MDP due to differences with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, recently hinted at a willingness to collaborate with his former party once more.
The fallout between Solih and Nasheed occurred after Solih denied Nasheed’s request to transition state governance to a parliamentary system. Following his departure from MDP, Nasheed established The Democrats, attracting other senior officials from MDP to join its ranks.
In elections, while MDP secured minority seats in the 20th assembly, The Democrats did not win any parliament seats.
